Stunning Miriam Haskel designer jewellery set

Description

An absolutely stunning example of Miriam Haskell jewellery, but a little bit more demure than one would expect. Miriam Haskell is noted in costume jewellery circles for her unique designs and attention to detail. Though many of her designs were slightly “outlandish” to modern tastes and used beads – often sourced in Europe – this gorgeous set comprises a necklace and earrings but not, quite rarely, beaded.

The design is that of oval metal discs hung lengthwise on a chain, repeated on the earrings. Each disc is coloured and alternated between goldtone, purple and a rich fuchsia pink all with a metallic hue.

The necklace chain is gold plated – a little hard to describe but basically two lines of perpendicular rectangles, one solid and one open. The discs are hung for about two thirds of the chain from the centre giving a stunning and shimmering drop. The clasp is a circular filigree tongue clasp signed to the rear.

The earrings are screwbacks so can be worn by pretty much anyone, they have a large lobe and small chain with 5 discs each to set off the necklace. Again the earrings are signed.

The set dates to about the 1940s or 50s, indicated by the signature (Haskell rarely signed in the pre-war years). It is highly glamorous, the metallic discs giving a real shimmer, great evening wear or actually could comfortably be worn to the supermarket.

Condition

This necklace and earring set is in fabulous condition. The gold plating is, as expected for age, a little dull but not worn through (a sign of great quality) all discs are intact and the screws and clasps all in good working order.
