They may not be the most commonly used items of cutlery but this set of eight silver fruit spoons is rather charming. Impress your guests with a boxed set of breakfast tableware hailing from the beautiful city of Edinburgh – a city famed for its history, theatre and of course silver. The spoons are what might be described as mini shovels having deep bowls with sharply cut, contoured edges, to slide between those cheeky wedges of grapefruit, leading to a distinct down-turned point. Slightly larger than the average teaspoon but smaller than a dessert spoon the delicate handles fit comfortably in the hand allowing greater purchase on what, to my mind, is a particularly obstinate fruit.
The spoons aren’t fancy, bearing the classic fiddle pattern, but given the date of 1927 (slap bang in the middle of the art deco period) this lack of fancy is unsurprising. They were assayed in Edinburgh and made by Brook and Son of George Street (successors to William Marshall and Sons); what is really nice about these spoons is that they weren’t boxed for another retailer. They were boxed in a dark green leatherette box with raised centre and gilt tooling for the silversmiths themselves – clearly shown on the silk lining….”Brook and Son, Goldsmiths to the King, 87 George Street, Edinburgh”. A really sweet, stand out and slightly unusual set of cutlery for just the right occasion.
Not quite 100 years old, the spoons themselves are in lovely condition. No chips, holes or dents in the silver and the hallmarks are clearly displayed on the back edge of each bowl. The box is in good condition for its age; no damage to the exterior bar some use-related scuffing and a solid push button clasp. The interior silk lining bears most of the exposure of years with impressions and some marking where the spoons have rested against it – but I have seen silk of the same age in much worse condition than this so all in all not bad considering.
