This rare pair of art nouveau vases are a real treat. Addressing what makes them rare first is the fact that they are a pair. In the research I have done, it seems a single vase here and a single vase there is about what a buyer can expect. However, here we have two delicious examples of fine French craftsmanship. The vases are made in aventurine glass – this is an imitation of the stone (though not entirely like it) in that the base colour is green and it contains gold flecks. It differs from the stone in tone and frequency of the gilt flecking. They are of bulbous shape with narrow aperture so probably bets as bud vases; hand enamelled with gilt enamel outlined in white in the secessionist/art nouveau style with rim and base and, one on either side, vertical lines; crossed at the top and with chevron at the base and studded with circles. Just under the collar is a band of leaves spotted with red bead berries.
These vases were designed and made by Legras (Founded by François-Théodore Legras, France, 1839-1916), and were part of his “Montjoye” (My Joy) range, first decade of the 20th century. A contemporary of Lalique and the great glass makers of Daum, the Legras dynasty has become synonymous with quality and these vases clearly show why. The colouration is demanding of light which gives a fine shimmer to the glass and the decoration is exquisite. They were probably enamel marked to the base although many pieces which featured in the catalogue were unsigned. A gorgeous and exceptional addition to a glass collection.
These vases reach you in prime condition for their age. There is some vague wear to the gilding though not deleterious to the overall design. No chips or nibbles (although there is a small firing crack on one collar – this is due to the labour intensive process used to make these vases and again not damage as such.)
