Description

Exemplary of the opulence of the Art Deco period, this gorgeous comport or table centre is a must have for Deco enthusiasts. Don’t be put off by words like comport  or table centre as this piece has a generosity of purpose and fits well into a modern home. Its geometric form is the epitome of deco style while retaining a practical purpose. It is a low pedestal bowl of octagonal form having pierced handles to either side, and paneled sides to reflect the shape of its plan. It is made in heavy gauge sterling silver which packs a punch where weight is concerned.

The pedestal base again echoes the octagonal form, while the handles have a loose curve and line design which could look coronal if viewed from above. The silver is hallmarked for Birmingham 1930 but has an anonymous designer (untraced) of NCJ Ltd. Untraced silversmiths are common, though it is surprising, given the quality of this comport, that NCJ have no associated history.

Condition

A lovely piece in superb condition. No damage to the silver and the hallmarks remain crystal clear. There is a very slight amount of surface lining where the piece has been used throughout its life – this is, however, a sign of life and history and nothing to worry about in terms of condition. The silver is heavy and of good quality so should still have a good few years in it.
