This antique WMF three handled item is something of a mystery – though we find that with quite a lot of pieces made by this industrious and well regarded company. Based in Germany and recognisable as one of the leading lights of the Jugendstil/art nouveau movement, WMF’s quality and designs are renowned and this piece is no exception. It comprises a silver plated frame with three handles, a tripod style base and decorated band. Into this frame is set an etched, clear glass liner.
The frame has stylised handles with a sharp edged scroll style, three plain feet and the retaining band has a ridged design studded with diamond shaped reliefs. The glass liner has swept vertical lines reflecting the triad nature of the piece and etched bunches of grapes on all three panels. The marks to the base indicate a date between 1900 and 1910 and uses their 1/0 ox plating method (very high grade silver plating) – my camera is not quite able to get a close up of the marks so description as follows – “WMF” in rectangle, “1/0 ox” stamp
The style is that of a tyg cup but this is far too large to be a cup. Its exact function remains something of a mystery but essentially (and this is common with WMF) it doesn’t really matter what it was for, only what your imagination can find for it now. So it could be a bon-bon dish, or a vase, or a pot-pourri bowl, or simply a decorative object. Very pretty and. of course, very well made.
This piece is in excellent antique condition. The glass is absolutely perfect – very good quality and well formed and etched. The silver plating is high quality and in generally good condition. As with most antique silver plated items, there are some very small areas around the feet where the plating is starting to lift through use but not detrimental to the overall appearance of the piece.
