Description
This silver and ivory page turner is a must have item with a shelf life. Always collectable but with a time limit on legal sales of ivory in the UK this beautiful page turner must be saved from the bin. It has a narrow ivory blade with a complex and detailed silver mounted handle. Still in the elaborate Victorian era it has multiple elements of the silversmith’s art including repousse, fetwork/filigree and the inevitable acanthus leaves and small flowers (a nod to the Belle Epoch influence from the continent perhaps).
Hallmarks are evident but small and delicately pressed. So it is clear the ivory is NOT modern, they date the piece to 1895 by Levi and Salaman who were without doubt among the finest Birmingham had to offer. Also marked Sterling on the reverse. A fine and delicate piece of Victoriana perfect for collectors. (Please see our FAQ section on protected materials for further details)
Condition
This page turner is in relatively good condition for its age. The silver has one or two very minor scuffs but no evident damage. Te ivory, as a brittle material, shows some signs of age towards the “usable” end, however this takes the form of tiny striations rather than actual cracks and is common to ivory of this age.
