Description
We just love the quirkiness of this sweet 19th century French ring box. It is to all intents and purposes an egg; and what better way to store your precious gems than in an egg, right? Supported on 3 ornate feet, the main body is an ormolu shell with acanthus style patterning, it parts about halfway up with a fold-over button clip to secure it.
Inside the base of the egg is lined with a pinkish velour to protect your jewels, the top remains unlined so perhaps not a jewellery box designed for travelling – more a dressing table piece. Its maker etc are unknown, this is just one of those typically late 19th century French novelties with a real charm to it.
Condition
This piece is in excellent condition, as far as we can tell the velour is original, though probably faded from a once rich red to its current pink. No damage to the ormolu, still reasonably bright and no dents or “accidents”.
